Introduction


Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, famously known as ‘Mahashay’, “MDH Uncle”, ‘Masala King’, ‘Dadaji’, or ‘King of Spices’ is an Indian businessperson. He is the owner and CEO of MDH masala. MDH (Mahshian Di Hatti Private Limited) is an Indian spice company. He spent first 25 years of his life in Pakistan. His spice business has spread all over the world. In 2019, the President of India Ram Nath Kovind honoured him with India’s third highest civilian award. 


Early Life

Mahashay Dharmapal Gulati was born in 1923 in Sialkot (Pakistan) and completed his education till class 5th. Soon after class 5th, he joined his father’s business and start learning about in and out of Masala business. Later on, due to the partition of India-Pakistan and riots his father’s business got totally destroyed and he moved to India. As time passed he moved to Delhi to his sister’s home and start looking for work to earn some money, but failed to find any job. So, he loaned Rs 1,500 money from friends and relatives and start riding tanga within the streets of Delhi, but due to low income, he thought of leaving it and start with his family business. He restarted his family business, and began selling spices. Dharampal says Karol Bagh is auspicious for him, and thus, does not wear slippers or shoes there. He believes this is the place where his business saw success. In 1948, he started a small masala store in a hut in Karol Bagh (Delhi). With this, he started to earn good money and within a span of 5 years. As the business took off, Dharampal rented another shop in Chandni Chowk in 1953. He then decided to purchase a plot in Kirti Nagar in 1959 to start his own factory, and this led to the birth of Mahashian Di Hatti Limited (MDH). 



The Success of MDH company 

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati has dedicated 60 years of his life to MDH and holds an 80 percent stake in the company. As of now, the company has more than 15 manufacturing departments all over the country and supplies to about 1000 dealers. The business which started as a small shop in Karol Bagh is now a 1500 crore enterprise. Other than India, MDH exports its products to more than 100 countries all around the world. They even have branches in Dubai and London. Gulati’s son governs the public undertakings while his six daughters take care of the distribution to various areas. The company hopes to inspire more customers to stop using unbranded products. As time passes, more consumers have started using packaged goods which helped in the growth of the MDH company. By 2016, the company saw an increase of 16 percent, which made the total revenue hit 13,200 crore rupees. The sales of MDH spices, dressing, and seasonings were the most fast-moving branch. MDH has more than 60 products out of which Deggi Mirch, Chat Masala, and Chana Masala are the most in-demand. These items account for a large part of the company’s profits. MDH sells around one crore packets of these products every month. The affordability of MDH products ensures the loyalty of customers from all over the country. MDH now exports spices to more than 100 countries across the world such as Switzerland, Japan, the US, and Canada. It is one of the biggest brands of spices, and manufactures almost 60 different types of spices in 150 Packages. Despite his age, Dharampal takes all major business decisions. MDH stood second in the spices market with a market share of 12% and Everest Spices are at the top with a market share of about 13%. Now, Mr. Dharampla Gulati’s son manages the overall operation along with his 6 sisters who all handle distribution. MDH son switched manual manufacturing to automatic to meet the high demands and today they manufacture 30,00 tonnes of spices powder on a daily basis. After manufacturing spices spread across 30,000 stockists and 4 lacks retail dealers. Also, in 2016, MDH made revenues of Rs. 924 crore and net profit of Rs. 213 crore and currently in 2020 MDH is valued at more than Rs. 2000 crore. 


Philosophy

The philosophy of Mahashay Dharampal Ji is “Give to the world the best you can, and the best will come back to you automatically” has virtually been a proverbial come true by the fact that today, MDH is a name that stands synonymous not only for quality spices but also for its contributions towards the welfare of society and upliftment of the needy, by way of establishing Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Trust. MDH today stands as a name in every house hold, trusted & relished all over the world by millions. 


Charity Work

Gulati donates nearly 90% of his salary to charity under the banner of the Mahashay Chunni Lal Charitable Trust. MDH under the leadership of Mahashay Dharam Pal has developed more than 20 schools including MDH International School, Mahashay Chunnilal Saraswati Shishu Mandir (named after his father), Mata Lilawati Kanya Vidyalaya (named after his late wife), and Mahashay Dharampal Vidya Mandir etc. He started a 10-bed eye hospital at Arya Samaj, Subhash Nagar, in November 1975. Later in January 1984, a 20-bed hospital was established in Janakpuri, New Delhi to commemorate his mother Mata Chanan Devi. Now it has 300 beds in about 5 acres land, the hospital is equipped with MRI, CT scan, Heart Wing, Neuro Sciences, IVF etc.
